Abstract:
A spectrum of complex, dynamic and global challenges are causing an ongoing effect on the security of supply of materials. Material demand is increasing, as societies develop and deploy the equipment and infrastructure needed to deliver a low carbon, sustainable, energy transition. For stakeholders engaging with these challenges, a focus has emerged around a range of materials, which have been termed critical materials. This lecture will explore this evolving story and what it means for governments, business and society.

Associate Professor, David Peck, researches and teaches in the field of circular built environment and critical materials, based in the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), The Netherlands.David is also visiting Professor with Coventry University and an adjunct Professor at MIP Politecnico di Milano, Graduate School of Business. He is the TU Delft lead scientist for EU Horizons 2020 projects ProSUM and ERN. David is TU Delft scientific leader for the EU KIC EIT Raw Materials. He leads a number of projects in this 2 bn Euro programme that has a focus on materials and circular economy. David specialises in critical materials, remanufacturing, and historical resource constraint.
