Abstract

University graduates are important actors in the knowledge-based economy, with studies demonstrating the importance of educated workers to the workforce and the economy (Jones, 2001; Benos and Zotou, 2014; Teixeira and Queirós, 2016). Due to government policies as well as financial constraints, many universities are focusing their resources into STEM, international students, and entrepreneurship education (Breznitz and Kenney, 2018). The main objective of this study is to explore the impact of field of study and international education experience on the likelihood of graduates becoming entrepreneurs. It is built upon prior research but contributes by bridging several gaps in the literature. Especially, the analysis shows that it is crucial to examine a much more complete education history of university students, in order to measure their background more accurately.

Shiri M. Breznitz, Associate Professor, an economic geographer, specializes in innovation, technology commercialization, and regional economic development. She has advised on the role of universities in the larger story of innovation, on the economic impact of biotechnology, and on the role of clusters in driving innovation. In addition, Dr. Breznitz is one of the section editors for Economic Geography at the Geography Compass Journal.
