The Internet of Value, enabled by Blockchain and Distributed Ledger technologies, is a new paradigm of a peer to peer economy without third party players or intermediaries in ecosystem without trust. Resulted from the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency world, Blockchain is gaining much interest globally. The goal of the Research line is to drive company to understand the technologies and to define opportunities for business. Moreover the goal is to contribute to the appropriate development of the Italian market and creating opportunities for meetings and discussion among major players in this field.

KEY RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The Blockchain & Distributed Ledger Observatory studies Blockchain, Distributed Ledger Technology and, more in general, the “Internet of Value”. Resulted from the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency world, Blockchain is gaining much interest globally. The goal of the Observatory is to generate knowledge, establish order and clarify these themes, contributing to the appropriate development of the Italian market and creating opportunities for meetings and discussion among major players in this field. More specifically, our research activities are structured on the following subjects.
Definitions and characteristics: analyze the definitions available in literature to consolidate a common taxonomy on Blockchain and Distributed Ledger topics; identify the characteristics of the various solutions and thus the conditions that make applying these solutions worthwhile.
Application environments: survey application environments and projects developed by national and international companies to establish which use cases are more interesting and promising.
Investments: quantify the level of interest and degree of investments in Blockchain and Distributed Ledger of major national corporations.
Startups and innovation directions: analyze the most interesting Startups and national and international Blockchain & Distributed Ledger ICOs to delineate innovation directions.
Technology, security and privacy: map the various Blockchain and Distributed Ledger configurations and compare them in terms of technology, security and privacy.
Regulation: study how legislation regulates such solutions and activate a constructive debate with legislative Authorities.
Different research methodologies are used, the main ones being case studies, surveys, and quantitative assessment models to evaluate the benefits stemming from Blockchain & Distributed Ledger applications. Moreover, interactive workshops with companies operating in the Blockchain & Distributed Ledger landscape are organised, in order to share data and experiences useful to feed and tune the analyses developed by the research team.
