Abstract:
Most of what we know about sustainable supply chains comes from studying what already exists, including their unsustainable habits. This seminar, led by Mark Pagell, takes a different starting point. Rather than describing the status quo, it asks participants to challenge their taken for granted assumptions to imagine what a genuinely sustainable, decent-work-oriented supply chain might look like.
Drawing on prescriptive theorizing, the session uses structured creative exercises to help participants break out of familiar ways of thinking about supply chains. Over 90 minutes, these methods will be explored and used to reflect on what they reveal, both for supply chains and for future directions in OSCM research.
Mark Pagell holds a Chair in Global Leadership and is a Full Professor of Sustainable Supply Chain Management at University College Dublin, Ireland. Pagell does research on topics such as sustainable supply chain management and human resource issues – including providing decent work and protecting employee safety – in operational environments. He was the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Supply Chain Management from 2016-2022, named a Distinguished Scholar for the OSCM Division at the Academy of Management, and received a Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship. Since receiving his PhD in Operations and Sourcing Management from Michigan State University in 1997, he has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles winning a number of awards including best papers published in the Journal of Supply Chain Management, Journal of Operations Management, and International Journal of Operations and Production Management.
