Conceived and organized by Accademia Teatro alla Scala in collaboration with the MIP Politecnico di Milano  Graduate School of Business and the Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa, the Master in Performing Arts Management promotes stage arts as a fundamental social, political and economic asset, and live  performances as a means for conserving and passing on to future generations a people’s cultural heritage and identity. The Master’s program is designed to prepare global professionals who can bring a solid cultural and artistic background coupled with economic and managerial skills to the production of stage performances, with a particular focus on Europe, North America and emerging markets.

Centering the development of each individual student, the curriculum features an organically structured set of complementary and interdependent modules and activities.

Global Network

Collaboration between the Accademia, MIP Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Business and the Piccolo Teatro di Milano puts students in an international network of contacts with theaters, festivals and show institutions. The Master also allows you to analyze all aspects of the show live through testimonials, seminars, meetings and many other dynamics. The teaching staff includes professionals from Opera Europa, Metropolitan Opera House, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera, Opera de Rennes, Berliner Philharmoniker, Hong Kong Arts Festival, DeVos Institute and WolfBrown.

The teaching approach helps to have a direct contact with the world of work. The pride of the Master is the internship, which takes place at the most important Italian and foreign institutions operating in the sector.

Tutoring

The staff of Master ensures a constant support to the students, especially in view of the comparison with the way of work.

  • 18 months: 6 months in class, attendance 5 days per week, 6 hours a day + 3 to 6 months internship in a qualified performing arts institution in Italy or abroad + 6 months project work

The Master’s programme is designed to prepare global professionals who can bring a solid cultural and artistic background coupled with economic and managerial skills to the production of stage performances, with a particular focus on Europe, North America and emerging markets.

PROGRAMME

Students will spend 1 semesters in Milan followed by a 3 to 6 months internship in a qualified performing arts institution in Italy or abroad. Then, they will execute and discuss a project work.

Who is eligible for the MPAM Programme?
  • Candidates with a B.A. or equivalent who wish to pursue a career in the performing arts or cultural sector;
  • Candidates with formal music, arts, or dance education who wish to acquire general knowledge of international cultural policies and develop their management and organizational skills;
  • Candidates without a formal degree who have a minimum of 3 to 5 years working experience in any field and wish to pursue a career change. General knowledge of the non-profit sector would be advantageous.

The English knowledge at an upper intermediate level is highly recommended.

How long is the MPAM programme?

The programme is 18 months long.

In what language is the programme taught?

The programme is almost entirely taught in English. During italian lessons a simultaneous translation is provided.

Do I need to speak Italian?

A fair knowledge of Italian is required. English and Italian preparatory courses will be available on request.

How many students are on the programme?

The average class size is around thirty-five students.

Is there an age limit for the programme?

The age limit for admission to the Master’s programme is 34 years. Applications that do not comply with this limit age will be evaluated individually.

ADMISSIONS

Status of applications: CLOSED

Applications are processed on a rolling basis. Since the number of seats in class is limited, candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Should the course become fully subscribed before the deadline dates, applications will close earlier.

Non-EU students are encouraged to apply at least three months before the start of the programme in order to allow enough time for the Declaration of Value (DOV) procedure for Italy and establishment of the student

The master is targeting junior profiles with little or no work experience.

The ideal candidate:

  • Candidates with a B.A. or equivalent who wish to pursue a career in the performing arts or cultural sector.
  • Candidates with formal music, arts, or dance education who wish to acquire general knowledge of international cultural policies and develop their management and organizational skills.
  • Candidates without a formal degree who have a minimum of 3 to 5 years working experience in any field and wish to pursue a career change. General knowledge of the non-profit sector would be advantageous.

The selection will be based on CV analysis, an interview (face to face or via Skype) and a written test.

FEES & BENEFITS

The programme costs €15,000. These costs cover the entire length of the programme, although they do not include living and travel expenses.

For exceptional applicants to the MPAM programme, a number of tuition fee contributions based on different parameters, such as merits and needs, are offered.

Candidates should indicate in the application form if they would like to apply for financial aid at the time of application.

Gianluca Spina Memorial Scholarship

Awarded by Gianluca Spina Association, this scholarship worth EUR 7.500 (gross) is offered to 2019/20 EU (non Italian) or extra EU MPAM candidates.

The scholarship is named after Gianluca Spina who was the Dean of MIP Graduate School of Business and Full Professor in Business Management and Supply Chain Management at the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering of Politecnico di Milano.

Candidates are chosen by a selection Committee representing both the Program Direction and the Association.

Beneficiaries and Requirements

In order to apply for this scholarship, candidates are asked to present the following documentation:

  • copy of the University Degree and transcripts
  • copy of passport or Identity Card (for EU citizens)
Submitting the Application and Outcome

Participants must send their application, for Master MPAM, through the site www.applyformasters.net and send an e-mail confirming their scholarship application to master.mpam@mip.polimi.it with MPAM Scholarship Gianluca Spina Association written in the subject line.

Only completed applications delivered within the due date will be submitted to the Committee. Candidates will be interviewed for the admission at the Master.

Candidates must obtain a score higher than 80/100 in order to be eligible for the scholarship.

Then, candidates eligible for the scholarship will be notified by an email and will be asked to develop an essay. A deadline will be set.

Candidates will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • academic and professional record,
  • results of the MPAM selection process,
  • knowledge of English and Italian,
  • assessment of their written essay

The successful candidate will be notified formally by the Committee by letter.

The scholarship is awarded at the sole discretion of the Committee, whose decision is final and cannot be appealed against. Several unsuccessful applicants may be placed on a waiting list and be reconsidered, at the discretion of the Committee, if the candidate who was awarded the scholarship withdraws his or her application.

Acceptance of the conditions

By applying to this scholarship and accepting the ensuing award, candidates fully agree to the conditions contained herein.

Under penalty of the immediate withdrawal of their scholarship, the successful candidate must confirm that they are enrolled on the MPAM programme, as well as formally accepting all scholarship conditions by informing the Admissions Office within the deadline indicated in the letter confirming that he/she has been awarded the scholarship.

 

MAECI

Five stipends for 6 months ( = € 900/month from January to June) supporting the cost of living, sponsored by the Italian Foreign Ministry.
