Conceived and organized by Accademia Teatro alla Scala in collaboration with the MIP Politecnico di Milano  Graduate School of Business and the Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa, the Master in Performing Arts Management promotes stage arts as a fundamental social, political and economic asset, and live  performances as a means for conserving and passing on to future generations a people’s cultural heritage and identity. The Master’s program is designed to prepare global professionals who can bring a solid cultural and artistic background coupled with economic and managerial skills to the production of stage performances, with a particular focus on Europe, North America and emerging markets.

Centering the development of each individual student, the curriculum features an organically structured set of complementary and interdependent modules and activities.

Global Network

Collaboration between the Accademia, MIP Politecnico di Milano Graduate School of Business and the Piccolo Teatro di Milano puts students in an international network of contacts with theaters, festivals and show institutions. The Master also allows you to analyze all aspects of the show live through testimonials, seminars, meetings and many other dynamics. The teaching staff includes professionals from Opera Europa, Metropolitan Opera House, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera, Opera de Rennes, Berliner Philharmoniker, Hong Kong Arts Festival, DeVos Institute and WolfBrown.

Tutoring

The staff of Master ensures a constant support to the students, especially in view of the comparison with the way of work.

  • 20 months: 8 months in class, attendance 5 days per week, 6 hours a day + 3 to 6 months internship in a qualified performing arts institution in Italy or abroad + 6 months project work

The Master’s programme is designed to prepare global professionals who can bring a solid cultural and artistic background coupled with economic and managerial skills to the production of stage performances, with a particular focus on Europe, North America and emerging markets.

PROGRAMME

Students will spend 8 months in Milan followed by a 3 to 6 months internship in a qualified performing arts institution in Italy or abroad. Then, they will execute and discuss a project work.

Who is eligible for the MPAM Programme?
  • Candidates with a B.A. or equivalent who wish to pursue a career in the performing arts or cultural sector;
  • Candidates with formal music, arts, or dance education who wish to acquire general knowledge of international cultural policies and develop their management and organizational skills;
  • Candidates without a formal degree who have a minimum of 3 to 5 years working experience in any field and wish to pursue a career change. General knowledge of the non-profit sector would be advantageous.

The English knowledge at an upper intermediate level is highly recommended.

How long is the MPAM programme?

The programme is 18 months long.

In what language is the programme taught?

The programme is almost entirely taught in English. During italian lessons a simultaneous translation is provided.

Do I need to speak Italian?

A fair knowledge of Italian is required. English and Italian preparatory courses will be available on request.

How many students are on the programme?

The average class size is around thirty-five students.

Is there an age limit for the programme?

The age limit for admission to the Master’s programme is 35 years. Applications that do not comply with this limit age will be evaluated individually.

ADMISSIONS

Status of applications: Applications will open on January, 14th

Applications are processed on a rolling basis. Since the number of seats in class is limited, candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Should the course become fully subscribed before the deadline dates, applications will close earlier.

Non-EU students are encouraged to apply at least three months before the start of the programme in order to allow enough time for the Declaration of Value (DOV) procedure for Italy and establishment of the student

The master is targeting junior profiles with little or no work experience.

The ideal candidate:

  • Candidates with a B.A. or equivalent who wish to pursue a career in the performing arts or cultural sector.
  • Candidates with formal music, arts, or dance education who wish to acquire general knowledge of international cultural policies and develop their management and organizational skills.
  • Candidates without a formal degree who have a minimum of 3 to 5 years working experience in any field and wish to pursue a career change. General knowledge of the non-profit sector would be advantageous.
  • The age limit for admission to the Master’s programme is 35 years. Applications that do not comply with this limit age will be evaluated individually.

The selection will be based on CV analysis, an interview (face to face or via Skype) and a written test.

The programme costs €17,500. These costs cover the entire length of the programme, although they do not include living and travel expenses.

Gianluca Spina Memorial Scholarship

Awarded by Gianluca Spina Association, these scholarships worth EUR 8.500 (gross).

The scholarship is named after Gianluca Spina who was the Dean of MIP Graduate School of Business and Full Professor in Business Management and Supply Chain Management at the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering of Politecnico di Milano.
For 2019/2021 MPAM candidates, the Association offers in particular:
- 2 scholarships for EU (non italian) or extra EU candidates
- 1 scholarship for italian candidates

STEPS TO APPLY

EU (non italian) and Extra-EU students

2. Pass the interview to be admitted to the Master’s program at least by May 31, 2019
3. Receive the admittance letter to the program by the Master Commission.
4. Apply for the Gianluca Spina scholarship no later than June 3, 2019 by sending an e-mail confirming your scholarship application to master.mpam@mip.polimi.it with “MPAM Scholarship Gianluca Spina Association” written in the subject line.
5. Write an essay (the subject will be sent to you via email on June 3, 2019) and return it to master.mpam@mip.polimi.it no later than June 7, 2019.
6. The successful candidates will be notified formally by the Committee via e-mail no later than June 14, 2019.

Italian students

2. Pass the admission interview to the Master’s program at least by June 19, 2019.
3. Receive the admittance letter to the program by the Master Commission.
4. Apply for the Gianluca Spina scholarship no later than June 20, 2019 by sending an e-mail confirming your scholarship application to master.mpam@mip.polimi.it with “MPAM Scholarship Gianluca Spina Association” written in the subject line.
5. Write an essay (the subject will be sent to you via email on June 20, 2019) and return it to master.mpam@mip.polimi.it no later than June 25, 2019.
6. The successful candidates will be notified formally by the Committee via e-mail no later than July 2, 2019.

CRITERIA OF ADMISSION FOR ITALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Candidates will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

• academic and professional record
• results of the MPAM selection process
• knowledge of English and Italian
• assessment of their written essay

Winners are chosen by a selected Committee representing the Program Direction.

The scholarship is awarded at the sole discretion of the Committee, whose decision is final and cannot be appealed against. Several unsuccessful applicants may be placed on a waiting list and be reconsidered, at the discretion of the Committee, if the candidate who was awarded the scholarship withdraws his or her application.

ACCEPTANCE OF THE CONDITIONS

By applying to this scholarship and accepting the ensuing award, candidates fully agree to the conditions contained herein.

Under penalty of the immediate withdrawal of their scholarship, the successful candidate must confirm that they are enrolled on the MPAM programme for 2019/21, as well as formally accepting all scholarship conditions by informing the Admissions Office within the deadline indicated in the letter confirming that he/she has been awarded the scholarship.

 

MAECI

ITALIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY (MAECI)
Italian Foreign Ministry offers five stipends for 6 months ( = € 900/month from January to June 2020) supporting the cost of living to international students (non-Italian).

STEPS TO APPLY
1. Apply to the Master in Performing Arts Management on applyformasters.net by September 4, 2019 (for extra-European Candidates) or by October 1, 2019 (for European candidates).
2. Pass the admission interview to the Master’s program and receive the admittance letter to the program by the Master Commission.
3. Apply for the MAECI scholarship no later than October 1, 2019 by sending an e-mail confirming your scholarship application to management@accademialascala with “Scholarship- MAECI” written in the subject line. The email must contain a personal statement (max 800 words) explaining why you want to study in Italy at Accademia Teatro alla Scala.

Accademia Teatro La Scala

For 2019/2021 MPAM candidates, Accademia offers 3 scholarships for Italian students only.

- 1 scholarship - 8.750 € (gross)
- 2 scholarships - 8.000 € (gross). Please note that this scholarship is related to a research project, which will be developed by the successful candidates during the Master’s program and will be evaluated as the final thesis project. More details will be available soon.

3. Receive the admittance letter to the program by the Master Commission.

The National Italian American Foundation offers one full-tuition scholarship of EUR 17,500 (approximately $20,000) which will be awarded to an Italian American student.
Please note that applicants must be American citizens with a very strong Italian-American cultural heritage.

1. Apply to the Master in Performing Arts Management on applyformasters.net by September 4, 2019
2. Apply for NIAF scholarship no later than September 4, 2019 by sending an e-mail confirming your scholarship application to gomaraschi@accademialascala.it with “MPAM Scholarship NIAF” written in the subject line.
3. The admission interview to the Master’s program and to the NIAF Scholarship will be held no later than September 9, 2019.

Please note that applicants must be American citizens with a very strong Italian-American cultural heritage.

Scholarship "La Scala fa Scuola. Un Coro in Città"

Nell’ambito del progetto La Scala fa Scuola. Un Coro in Città, promosso da Accademia Teatro alla Scala e Fondazione TIM con il patrocinio del Comune di Milano e la collaborazione dell’Ufficio Scolastico Regionale per la Lombardia, verranno assegnate n.2 borse di studio del valore di € 8.000 agli allievi della nuova edizione del Master in Performing Arts Management.

La Scala fa Scuola. Un Coro in Città ha l’obiettivo di portare nelle scuole del capoluogo lombardo docenti dell’Accademia Teatro alla Scala esperti nella disciplina della Didattica Corale, al fine di stimolare e sviluppare la cultura musicale attraverso la creazione di cori di voci bianche.  Il progetto prevede, in particolare, la realizzazione di dieci laboratori in altrettante scuole primarie, fra ottobre 2019 e maggio 2020.  Il percorso formativo dei ragazzi si concluderà il 31 maggio con un grande concerto finale al Teatro alla Scala che vedrà i dieci cori protagonisti insieme al Coro di Voci Bianche dell’Accademia scaligera.

Agli allievi assegnatari dei contributi si richiede di svolgere due progetti di ricerca collegati al progetto.

Entrambi i progetti di ricerca avranno la valenza di project work, necessario al fine di ottenere il diploma di Master universitario di primo livello a giugno 2021. Gli allievi saranno supervisionati da un tutor concordato dall’Accademia Teatro alla Scala e Fondazione Tim.

La Scala fa Scuola. Un Coro in Città s’inserisce nell’ambito della partnership pluriennale fra Accademia Teatro alla Scala e Fondazione TIM, finalizzata a sostenere i giovani ed il loro talento attraverso una serie di progetti innovativi.

1 borsa di studio sarà legata allo svolgimento di un’indagine qualitativa della valutazione in itinere dei risultati del progetto (da gennaio 2020 a giugno 2020).
