WHY CHOOSE US?

Big corporations and consultancies need to strategically blend market innovation and transformation processes, specifically redesigning the internal mode to conceive new products and business models. To tackle such big challenges, companies are intrigued by skillsets that combine strategy and design.

The role of designers in corporations has dramatically changed over recent years and it is still evolving: designers are asked to not only own the scope of the overall project, identifying novel opportunities and mobilising means for achieving them, but also to lead innovation and strategic processes, managing agencies and resources, analysing data and generating valuable insights. At the same time, companies are looking for managers well equipped with a design attitude as a powerful tool to blend client and stakeholder perspectives with market opportunities, to envision strategic directions that leverage emerging behaviours, new socio-cultural trends and the opportunities provided by digital technologies.

To meet these growing needs, MIP Politecnico di Milano and POLI.design have jointly developed the International Master in Strategic Design for Innovation and Transformation (SDIT), a 1-year programme structured in four main content blocks. The SDIT intends to involve executives who want to combine an investment in knowledge with their work commitments. The SDIT aims to train professionals and executives in combining design attitude and abilities with classical analytical-managerial skills. This entails planning, coordinating, and implementing consistent design operations and processes to meet the design direction, the strategic framework, and performances targets.

The Master SDIT aims to prepare designers and managers for navigating and driving the actual complex challenges, which means being able to:

Imagine meaningful innovations able to improve human wellbeing and to impact society;
Inspire colleagues and stakeholders to pursue strategic transformation;
Lead design projects activating virtuous employee engagement and breaking the culture of silos among different business areas;
Exploit the opportunities provided by digital technologies through the interplay between artificial intelligence and human intuition as well as big and thick data;
• Stimulate entrepreneurial mindsets to activate and promote agile projects;
• Organise the creative process to favour the integration with operations.

The Master SDIT can count on the experience and commitment of 6 Ambassadors, directly involved in innovation and transformation processes:

Roberto Battaglia, Transformation Lead – IMI Corporate & Investment Banking @ Intesa Sanpaolo;
Monica Dalla Riva, Vice President Design & CX @ Deutsche Telekom;
Marco Giglio, Managing Director Design and Engineering @ BCG Platinion;
Antonio Grillo, Service Design and UX Director @ Tangity – Part of the NTT Data Design Network;
Camilla Mignani, Service Designer & UX/UI Chapter Lead @ Vodafone Business;
Lorenzo Ruggieri, Expert Associate Partner, Innovation @ Bain & Company;
Alessandra Fidanzi, Head of Digital Factory and center of Excellence Data Science, Agile & Design Thinking @ Eni;
Marco Sammaria Head of Digital Design & Intelligence @ Unipolsai Assicurazioni S.p.A
Marzia Battaglia Design Manager @ Assist Digital.

PROGRAMME

The kick off of the master is in September 2022.

The International Master in Strategic Design for Innovation and Transformation (SDIT) is a 1-year programme. The academic structure is divided into 4 main blocks and ends with a final Project Work.
This programme includes a combination of different initiatives: face-to-face experiences such as company visits to meet innovation and design managers, a cultural tour to witness the Italian evolution of design, and a visit to professional Labs of modern masters of design. Furthermore, during the Master course, candidates will participate in two Digital Bootcamps: remote workshop sessions promoted by leading design-driven companies.

A typical week for our students is structured as follows:

WEEK type A: Video Clips available on the Digital Platform (max 16) + One Live session (2.5 hours)

OR

WEEK type B: Two live sessions (2.5 hours each)

Each course will last for two weeks and can combine the two structures (A+B) or include two live sessions for each week (B+B).
Live sessions are held online on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.00 until 9.30 PM CET.

The Master is divided into 4 main blocks:

INNOVATION AND DESIGN

The “Innovation and Design” block interprets strategy making as a process strongly affected by the development of innovation and the role that design plays in the organisation. Mainly, it provides an overview of strategy-making concepts related to a specific industrial setting where creativity management and design represent key assetsHere, the idea of strategy making is interpreted through the lenses of design, where the concepts of “design-driven” innovation, the close link between planning and execution, and the human-centricity principles tend to update the classical and orthodoxical strategy-related constructs. On the other handthe block treats Corporate Entrepreneurship and Organisation Transformation as fundamental components to sustain continuous renewal and align the organisational posture to the strategic purposes. Strong emphasis will be placed on the concept of Strategic Design to bring strategic thinking down to the product-service system level. A deep-diving experience on how design-driven companies work is provided thanks to innovation classes and design managers who share their experiences with students. The group projects proposed by innovative companies and supported by them are part of the training programme and add a unique chance for students to work on real cases in close connection with design-driven companies.

LEADERSHIP AND ENGAGEMENT

The “Leadership and Engagement” block provides an overview of theories and actional behaviours to illustrate leadership to create a culture of innovation, inspiring the team and stakeholders and activating a virtuous process of engagement across organisational silos. As has been recognised, unexpected obstacles and inertia are common in innovation and design projects. Here, designers and innovation managers are required to learn how to embrace complexity, identifying the key aspects underpinning a sound involvement of all the actors necessary to create the expected outcome. This part of the Master presents the different nature of Leadership: effectively developing capabilities to manage change and innovation in organisational contexts. The block connects Decision-Making approaches with an in-depth review of the constructs of Organisational Behaviour and Business Process Management. Furthermore, the conclusive part presents the overlapping area between Design culture and Organisational culture; the overview of the primary Design culture principles/pillars is presented as a means to nurture a culture of innovation in organisations by increasing employee engagement and their creative capacity. Designing spaces that facilitate interaction and the sparking of creativity, conceiving an intangible infrastructure that enables participation and inclusion, and developing a culture oriented to “learn by failure” are all part of that game. The block alternates theoretical lectures with testimonials by design leaders that will show how design culture penetrated a business culture adding new meanings, novel values, and actionable principles.

DATA AND CREATIVITY

The “Data and Creativity” block is hinged on the central theme of data. Over the last twenty years, the subject of data has profoundly changed how companies create strategies, generate innovations, and interface with users. While Big Data provides immediate market feedback on consumer preferences and trends, creativity often works with other data: it analyses the dataset differently from the way in which data mining systems can. Creativity feeds on 'weak' data, peripheral data that is not collected globally, but derived from a specific context of use. It is data that some people call “weak”, but which sparks creativity. After a general overview of the role of Big Data in innovation strategies and processes, the block will focus on how to conduct User research and gather qualitative data to generate valuable insights. Thus, the content will present how to transform services leveraging multiple data sources and how data can be grasped, organised and framed to support and induce creativity in the team. The Master explores the concept of data-driven design through specific applications and the voice of innovation managers who run consulting projects where data plays a key role.

DESIGN OPS AND TRANSFORMATION

The “Design Ops and Transformation” block aims to break down the myth of the designer and his chaotic work outside the organisational rules and business procedures. In successful organisations, the development of the design process is planned and framed as a flow of operations where actors, activities, tools, and enablers of creativity have to be connected among themselves and with other parts of the organisation. According to that frame, creativity needs to govern the design process while considering the organisation’s purpose, the talents inside the organisation walls, the knowledge sharing mechanism and the overall structure associated with the power flow. After an overview of open innovation and collaborative mechanisms logic, the block focuses on modern creative project management methodologiesagile methodologies, design methods and the organisational rules underlying UX/UI projects. The modules in this block articulate advanced didactic methods that see the cohabitation of the discussion of case studies, the development of group projects, and the introduction of some software related to the management of DesignOps.

During the second half of the Master, participants are required to carry out a Project Work, which will be discussed at the end of the course. The objective of the Project Work is to develop a consultancy project with the support of the MIP Politecnico di Milano Faculty. Working closely with Politecnico di Milano professors and researchers, participants in the programme will have the opportunity to apply the tools and methods learned during the SDIT Master to tackle issues of interest to companies and build relationships of great value to their professional careers.

Leading with Purpose Course

LEADING WITH PURPOSE COURSE

What is "Leading with Purpose"?

Leaders today face a unique range of interconnected challenges. A workforce looking for greater meaning and purpose; consumers increasingly choosing brands based on their contribution to society and the way they conduct themselves; a turbulent environment constantly disrupted by innovations blurring the lines between once distinct businesses; environmental concerns challenging the sustainability of existing value creation models; a global pandemic threatening the well-being of humankind. Quality

Today, MIP Politecnico di Milano is the main and most authoritative Italian school of project management.

The ieMPM originates from the evolution over a period of more than twenty years of the Master in Engineering and Contracting (MEC - eMEC). On this basis, the programme can now count on the collaboration of top managers with consolidated experience in the field of project management, who are able to illustrate the lessons learned and the best/good practices deriving from their application in companies and in real projects.

The Faculty is made up of professors from the Management Engineering department of the Politecnico di Milano who, in addition to an academic career, constantly carry out research and consultancy activities for companies. It integrates methodological rigour, innovative knowledge and management experience in a unique way.

Career Network

The ieMPM is a great opportunity to take a journey of professional growth towards one of the most requested high-profile figures on the job market: the Project Manager.

It provides the opportunity to enrich your professionalism by acquiring specialist training in the management and planning of projects over a broad spectrum of complexity.

It allows you to get in touch with Project Managers and leading companies in the management of italian and international projects. ieMPM students can benefit from the support of the Career Development Office, which organises a series of activities designed to work on your personal branding and to build up a strong professional network.

The international classroom composition of the Master, which is delivered in English, gives students the opportunity to develop a global network.

Customisation and Innovation

The ieMPM allows you to customise and specialise your study plan, giving you the ability to choose from various elective courses that are offered to focus your training on topics of interest for your professional growth.

The content and methodologies are constantly updated to follow the evolution of the role of the project manager in the most diverse sectors, and offer participants the opportunity to learn the use of some cross-cutting eSoftware Tools approaches.

Flexibility

Without compromising your own work activities, it allows you to develop the figure of the Project Manager at 360°, through a formula mainly delivered in distance learning.

It makes extensive use of interactive learning through business games, project work, case studies, group work, management testimonials and MIP’s smart learning platform.

Soft skills

Over the years, ieMPM has been enhanced with a set of activities dedicated to the development

of soft skills such as leadership, negotiation, communication, the management of virtual teams, outdoor tasks with feedback on resilience capacity and agility tests on the aptitude to act in a multicultural context, all of which are increasingly indispensable for project management in the complex international context. Team-building skills, managing stress and change and boosting motivation and personal resilience are skills increasingly required by Project Managers, who often find themselves managing work teams in conditions of high stress in order to achieve their objectives.

PROGRAMME

The kick off of the master is in November 2022.

The International Executive Master in Project Management is a 12-month part-time programme. The academic structure of the ieMPM, with the adoption of advanced training methodologies essentially based on a smart-learning model centred, above all, on remote live sessions, content that can be used asynchronously on the MIP platform and some face-to-face training, aims to provide the opportunity to acquire an integrated and inter-functional managerial culture to support and train professionals so that they are able to assume key roles of responsibility in the management of projects and related processes.

DIGITAL LEARNING

Students can participate to courses:

  • In synchronous mode with participation in live sessions for Tuesday and Thursday lessons (7pm-9pm CET)
  • In asynchronous mode (viewing of clips and recording of live sessions in case of absence).
FACE-TO-FACE WEEKS

The programme includes two full face-to-face weeks: a first week with Kick-off and Outdoor Training and a second week taking place in the latter part of the programme.

OUTDOOR TRAINING

This is a strongly interactive and intense two-day experience, carried out at the beginning of the Master and in an environment outside the Business School. The activities during the outdoor training are designed to develop students’ team-building skills, stress management, enhancement of motivation and personal resilience, all of which are increasingly useful for building the professionalism of the Project Manager, who is required to manage a team with challenging goals and often in extremely stressful conditions (environmental, relational and emotional).

Through classes, presentations and company visits, participants will deepen their understanding of the Chinese culture and the local business environment, as well as their knowledge of operations and supply chain management in emerging Asian economies.

The methodology reflects companies’ demand for professionals with skills such as the capacity to reflect, the ability to act in the face of change, the versatility to work in teams and the adaptability to face the challenges of a global environment.

As the programme is part time, students are able to employ the ideas and practices learnt in class, directly into their current working professions. This allows for simultaneous growth and development, and the ability to effectively implement the didactical and cognitive skills and functions relevant to their position.

Furthermore, students will be able to train their skills through 9 company-led challenges, case studies, simulation games (The Connections), analysis, discussion groups and team-working activities by constantly working on real-life business cases and making strategic decisions. Morevoere, at the end of the program, students will have the chance to apply the concepts learnt during the Gemos journey to real contexts with the final Project Work.

CONCENTRATION ON LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Being effective in today’s business world requires managers and leaders to consistently work on developing their personal and professional skills. In the context of a rapidly changing and demanding business environment, communication skills, the ability to work effectively in teams, leadership qualities, decision-making skills and the capacity to resolve conflicts in a constructive way, are among the most important competencies.

The concentration on leadership skills is aimed at transforming operations and supply chain personnel into leaders. Within the Concentration, those and other so‐called soft skills will be assessed, trained, and developed.

NETWORKING WITH COMPANIES

GEMOS is designed and delivered in partnership with companies: more than 20 companies are directly involved, through sessions, visits and opportunities. This can be an excellent way for both students and professionals to network, and provide them with a unique opportunity to gain insights into how various companies operate in different markets.

In addition, students have the chance to interact with the Corporate Advisory Board (CAB), the international consultancy committee of the Global Executive Master in Operations and Supply Chain Management, composed of independent business professionals from global companies.

The challenges represent some of the most dreadful pain points of which many companies are well aware, yet which they have not yet found a way of assuaging. The program will address certain key issues within operations and supply chain management:

  • Supply chain strategy
  • Global supply chain management
  • Factory planning via big data
  • Smart manufacturing
  • Digital procurement
  • Managing distribution networks
  • Supply chain sustainability
  • Supply chain innovation
  • Supply chain risk management
INTERNATIONAL WEEK IN EUROPE

The first international week takes place in Europe – in Milan (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain) – at the beginning of the program, and it directly involves MIP and EADA, also with the purpose of team‐building. This week is designed to help participants develop an in‐depth understanding of how European business operates in domestic and global markets, with an emphasis on operations and supply chain management. The week ends with a full‐day campus experience totally devoted to introducing the concentration on leadership skills.

What can you expect? Lectures, company visits, in-company classes, visits to the Politecnico di Milano labs, networking activities, and a visit to Barcelona’s ports, exploiting both hard and soft skills in a very inspiring way.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK IN CHINA

The International Week in China consists of full immersions at Beijing Jiaotong University and at Xi’an Jiaotong University. Beijing Jiaotong University was founded by the Qing Government in 1909, growing out of the former Beijing Railway Management Institute; it is still one of the most important universities in telecommunications and railway management in China. Besides, it is the first higher educational institute specialised in educating managerial talents in China. Xi'an Jiaotong University is grounded in its strengths in engineering, technology, management, and life sciences. It houses five key national laboratories, four special national laboratories, and two national engineering research centres, and it is the hub of the University Alliance of the Silk Road.

CONCENTRATION ON LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Leaders help themselves and others to do the right thing. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. In business, leadership is linked to performance, and any definition of leadership must take that into account. While there are some people who seem to be naturally endowed with more leadership abilities than others, anyone can learn to become a leader by improving some specific skills. The concentration on Leadership Skills is aimed at transforming operations and supply chain personnel into leaders.

The methodology focuses on learning by doing, reflection and conceptualisation. To optimise the learning process and take full advantage of the online format, different teaching methodologies will be used during this course.

FINAL BUSINESS PROJECT WORK

The final Business Project is a short end of course project performed at an associated company. The goal of the Project is to develop an action plan in operations and supply chain management to improve the competitive position of a chosen company.

The specific objectives of the Project are:

  • To apply the knowledge acquired throughout the program to a specific business situation
  • To identify the gaps between corporate or business strategy and operations/supply chain strategy (implementation)
  • To develop a feasible, complete, coherent and convincing plan of action
  • To develop research and presentation skills

Students can undertake the project work at a place of their choice, which can be the company where they work or a different one. The project will be performed individually under the guidance of a university tutor.

The MIP and EADA faculty is made up of professors with extremely diverse professional and educational backgrounds, further complemented by a dedicated teaching staff.

Faculty members of MIP, many of whom are successful professionals in their own right, draw on their own consulting work and the immense research facilities of the Politecnico di Milano to provide, up-to-date, diverse and relevant material for lectures and business cases, and routinely strive to be readily accessible to students, and to make classroom time a rewarding and exciting experience.

Additionally, the faculty is composed of a large number of international members, which is further representative of the school’s highly globalised environment. In particular, EADA professors have a strong reputation for practical teaching quality and for developing of management skills and personal growth.

WHY CHOOSE US

Here are the top 5 Reasons why the International Part Time MBA of MIP Politecnico di Milano will be a game changer for you.

1. A FACE-TO-FACE PART TIME FORMAT

MIP International Part Time MBA will allow you to gain an internationally recognized qualification without interruption to your career. The program’s flexibility makes it ideal for organising your studies around your schedule of professional and personal commitments, as weekends with face-to-face teaching take place once a month. What is more, your career will reap immediate rewards from your newly-acquired knowledge, as you can put your learning into practice immediately in the workplace.

The face-to-face format will allow you to meet regularly in person with your classmates and the Faculty as well as immerse yourself in the school environment.

As a complement to the face-face interaction, an innovative digital learning platform, developed in partnership with MICROSOFT, will enhance your learning experience and facilitate your preparation for the classes.

Many of the classes are also recorded so if you are unable to follow in real time, you can catch up at a more convenient moment. With an already demanding week time job, this flexibility makes all the difference when coordinating a busy schedule.

2. A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

A truly international experience is waiting for you.
You will fly to two European destinations to participate in two intensive International Weeks, during which you will attend classes, visit companies and participate in social events. You will be part of an international class with students from all over the world, either based in Italy or travelling each month from abroad, and learn from an international Faculty with Visiting Professors coming from the numerous partner schools of our network (such as New York University School or Arizona State University in the US, University of Strathclyde in UK, Hochschule der Bayerischen Wirtschaft in Germany).

3. CLASSES WITH COMPANIES

Students will be exposed to international companies such as Microsoft, Siemens, Moleskine, Whirlpool by directly discussing with managers during lessons at MIP.
Classes held with companies will give students the opportunity to get the inside track on multinational market leaders, meet top executives and be taught by leading professionals in each field, who will transmit the know-how of the company during each module.
Furthermore, the HR Managers will dive deep into the recruitment processes of the companies by illustrating the qualities that they look for in an MBA candidate and the potential job vacancies, if available.

4. DESIGN YOUR CAREER STRATEGY

Develop your self-awareness and build your personal brand. Our Career Development Office will support you in designing a highly personalized path to allow you to re-brand yourself and to better understand the job market and the right channels to spot the opportunities you are looking for. Plenty of other initiatives, among which are business talks, roundtables, career workshops and career days, are offered all along the program so that you can learn more about the dynamics of specific industries of your interest, as well as be provided with the right tools to build your career strategy, not to mention the chance for you to eventually increase your networking opportunities through our company network.

5. DEVELOP AN ENTREPRENEURIAL THINKING

Whether you want to launch your own venture or add an entrepreneurial thinking to your toolkit, the program will give you completely new and disruptive ways of thinking about entrepreneurship and innovation, either in a start-up environment or in more established companies. And if you are a wannabe entrepreneur, the program offers the platform to build on your own business idea and test it in front of real investors and business angels. In particular, you will have special access to the services of PoliHub - Politecnico di Milano's in-house start-up incubator, recently ranked second in Europe and third in the world by UBI Global.

Do I have to come to the School for my interview?

If you are located near the school or visiting Milan, we would be most happy to receive you on campus for your interview. However, given the international nature of the student body, this is not feasible in most cases. We therefore conduct interviews via Skype using a webcam.
