Data-driven transformation: enablers, opportunities and risks

About the project

Research aims to investigate the transition into a data-driven company, in terms of enablers and implications. The project analyzes the impacts of Cloud Computing adoption and examines competitiveness opportunities provided from Big Data and Artificial Intelligence applications. Moreover, research is intended to understand companies’ response to growing Information Security and Privacy challenges. Research activities are conducted within Digital Innovation Observatories of the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano.

KEY RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Data represent an enormous source of competitive advantage in the digital era and companies are undertaking a roadmap of transformation to exploit new business opportunities. Research aims to understand how data-driven transformation is changing IT infrastructures, practices and organization, and how it is impacting on the companies’ performances. In particular, the project investigates the roadmap to Cloud Computing adoption and its impacts on IT systems and processes, deepens the business opportunities generated by Analytics and Artificial Intelligence and how to extract value from data, and ultimately estimates the Security and Privacy implications. Research activities are conducted within four Observatories of the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano: Cloud Transformation Observatory, Big Data Analytics & Business Intelligence Observatory, Artificial Intelligence Observatory and Information Security & Privacy Observatory.

More in detail, the main objectives of the current research are:

  • Quantify market values and identify main expenditure dynamics of Italian enterprises on Cloud Computing, Big Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Information Security systems.
  • Measure how widely companies adopt Cloud Computing and Information Security and Privacy sistems
  • Measure how widely companies adopt Analytics and Artificial Intelligence technologies and which projects carry out.
  • Understand the role of Artificial Intelligence techniques both on companies’ performances and job market evolution
  • Monitor the evolution of IT supply chain models
  • Monitor changes in privacy and technologies legislation and identify legal implications on companies’ choices
  • Analyze the evolution of skills and organizational models to manage new IT infrastructures, Data Science needs and growing cyber security threats
  • Understand the role that start-ups play in all these fields

Research is conducted in an empirical way integrating different methodologies, such as quantitative and case studies.
