Abstract:

The dynamic capabilities construct, though one of the most influential in recent management history, has consistently been critiqued for its abstract conceptualization and lack of empirical grounding and, thus, has not made the practice-level contribution to the Innovation Management field that scholars and practitioners might expect. This presentation reports on research aimed at addressing this gap by taking a multi-level perspective, drawing explicit linkages, both conceptual and empirical, between innovation-related dynamic capabilities at the organizational level and specific observable behaviors at the individual level, using a newly designed assessment scale that assesses, for development purposes, a core set of essential competencies with important implications for the critical development challenges facing organizations interested in operationalizing the linkage of dynamic capabilities at the organizational level with innovation competency development at the individual level.
