Abstract:
The presentation starts from the hypothesis that social innovation will always require the involvement of civil society to develop. It is argued against propositions that social innovation can exclusively be driven by state or market forces. To test the hypothesis the presentation proceeds in three steps: First, social innovation is conceptualized against the background of social investment. Secondly social innovation is specifically defined as societal problem solving. And thirdly the role of the third sector for social innovation is explicitly tested, using summary results of the FP7 project ITSSOIN as the empirical support of the argument.
