Abstract:
The generalization of the Sharing Economy (SE) in several economic sectors is disrupting those industries. As intermediary platforms earn market share rapidly, growing ten times faster than traditional companies, they affect existing companies, labour markets and prices of rental apartments.
SE as a conceptual term has been in the media for a number of years, being of frequent use among several practitioners, for instance, in the well-intentioned speech of Joe Gebbia from Airbnb, the Car2Go slogan “proud to share”, or some companies, like Uber or Deliveroo, trying to link their names with this trend because of people’s positive attitude towards it.
Despite the popularity of the concept and the high growth rate of companies claiming to be a part of it, no generally accepted definition exists for this term. In the proposed seminar, the underlying factors that support the concepts will be presented through the results of a systematic literature review. A framework that allows highlighting the differences between platform economy and SE will also be presented, as an evolution of the definition presented.
The seminar will then present implications of the SE on business modelling and on the externalities that the SE produces, with a particular emphasis on gentrification, touristification and the effects on the labour market.
