Abstract:

Despite the growing interest in the concept of an ecosystem among researchers, practitioners, and governments, there remains a partial (and even limited) understanding of how to build a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem that fits different contexts, countries, populations, or industries. This research presentation aims to shed light on this little-known concept and advance the discussion on territorial and international ecosystem dynamics by drawing on current working papers and publications. To achieve this, the presentation will support a mindshift in entrepreneurial ecosystem research at the intersection of configuration, strategic and international perspectives, based on the current research publications. Specifically, although entrepreneurial ecosystem research has mainly been studied through a configurational approach that describes its systemic composition, current research advances argue that the entrepreneurial ecosystem may reflect a strategic behavior or even a mindset. This stream of literature will argue that entrepreneurial ecosystems could reflect complementary strategic behaviors that extend across geographical boundaries. Finally, the presentation will share research opportunities, special issues, and conferences in order to build bridges for future research collaborations.
