Abstract:

Addressing complex healthcare challenges necessitates the exploration of knowledge across disciplinary boundaries and active engagement with multiple stakeholders. Co-design tools can play a pivotal role in guiding the exploration of problems and solutions, assisting researchers in reflecting on the design process, shaping design sessions, and capturing group exploration dynamics more effectively. In this presentation, researchers will share a diverse range of projects conducted in various healthcare settings, spanning the micro-, meso-, and macro-levels. They will discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by design-led interventions across different health systems and projects.

Leah Heiss is the Eva and Marc Besen International Research Chair in Design at Monash University. Through collaborative projects Leah has brought humanity centred design to solutions for hearing loss, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental health and loneliness. Leah’s co-design methods have been used to evolve new systems of care for low birth weight, cancer care, eating disorders, aged care, voluntary assisted dying and acquired brain injury. She is currently working with the World Health Organisation, using design strategies to improve the uptake and implementation of WHO guidelines. Leah co-leads Monash University’s ambitious Future Healthcare initiative focused on addressing the challenges of complex health ecosystems.

Olga Kokshagina is an Associate Professor in Innovation at EDHEC Business School (France) and Adjunct Researcher at Monash University. She is a member of the French Digital Council and WHO Design Advisory Group. Olga contributes to the industrial chair in health and innovation, focusing on healthcare innovation, co-design, value-based healthcare, patient-centric care, and digital health. Her work appears in journals like Design Studies, Research Policy, Technological Forecasting, and California Management Review. Featured by the World Economic Forum, L’humanité, Le Figaro, The Conversation, Olga co-authored books: The Radical Innovation Playbook and Envisioning the Future of Learning for Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (De Gruyter).
