Abstract:

International students mobility has been at the heart of the internationalization of higher education institutions (HEI) for decades. It has benefited from many factors, including for instance the increased integration of the European Higher Education Area, public financial support, and recognition by international ranking agencies. With the increasing awareness of the urgent need to tackle climate change and the rise of sustainability as an institutional and educational goal for HEI, there is a need to question international mobility given its carbon footprint. The present research was commissioned by CDEFM, the French grouping of 35 elite business schools, to investigate their practices in terms of green international mobility. Using a qualitative approach (interviews, participating observation), the research offers a first conceptualization of green international mobility, highlights schools’ motivations as well as structural and practical barriers, and proposes a diagnostic tool in terms of advancement in the transition towards green mobility.
