Abstract:

In light of the increasing emphasis on achieving sustainability within global supply chains, Meng Jia and her co-authors have conducted a study on prevalent strategies and practices employed by global brands, with a particular focus on sustainability-oriented supplier development (SSD) projects. Their research, which has resulted in the publication of two papers so far, provides valuable insights into the intricate interactions and knowledge transfer processes involved in multi-tier SSD projects. For instance, the study examined the role and involvement of suppliers in SSD, employing the theory of boundary-spanning and boundary objects to assess supplier engagement in extending and internalizing SSD projects. The research highlights the critical importance of social capital and absorptive capacity for suppliers’ successful participation in SSD projects, and it also emphasizes the necessity for focal firms to consider suppliers’ unique needs and characteristics when implementing SSD projects. Looking ahead, the research team is interested in exploring the dissemination and scaling up of SSD projects across the entire supply chain. Current research and practices often focus on a limited number of key suppliers, which is insufficient for achieving a substantial impact on the entire supply chain. Additionally, practitioners are keen to understand the generalizability and transferability of SSD projects. The authors invite the audience to engage in discussions and provide comments on the existing research and potential future directions.

Meng Jia is an Assistant Professor in Operations and Supply Chain Management at the University of Leicester’s School of Business. Her research focuses on sustainable supply chain management, particularly sustainability-oriented supplier development initiatives, the role of first-tier suppliers in multi-tier supply chains, and the involvement of non-traditional actors like consultancies in addressing sustainability challenges. Her work, primarily within the apparel and textile industry, aims to provide valuable insights into advancing sustainability practices in these sectors.
Meng Jia has published her research in respected journals, including the International Journal of Operations & Production Management (IJOPM), Production Planning and Control, and the International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. One of her papers was honoured with the Highly Commended Paper award from IJOPM in 2021
