KEY RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Research activities are focused on improved energy efficiency in industrial end-users, with particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises and energy efficiency services:

  • Identify, classify and evaluate barriers for the adoption of specific energy-efficient technologies, with focus on ancillary systems (e.g., compressed air, motors, lighting system, HVAC);
  • Identify, classify and evaluate barriers for energy efficiency according to government, industry, ESCOs and stakeholders perspectives and along the energy efficiency supply chain;
  • Develop an innovative taxonomy for identifying and evaluating drivers to promote the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and management practices in industrial enterprises;
  • Identify and evaluate the roles of different players (e.g., government, technology suppliers, ESCOs) on promoting industrial energy efficiency;
  • Develop a structured characterization of energy management practices;
  • Structure a characterization of energy-efficient measures (e.g., motor systems, compressed air systems, …) and broad investigation of factors affecting their adoption;
  • Evaluate the effect of the energy efficiency supply chain on the adoption of energy efficiency measures in manufacturing enterprises and on their energy efficiency level;
  • Develop advanced methodologies for evaluating the multiple-benefits (non-energy) benefits of energy efficiency measures;
  • Develop methodologies for energy audit and benchmarking, in particular for small and medium-sized enterprises;
  • Analyse smart metering projects;
  • Develop energy management assessment method for industrial companies, especially SMEs;
  • Explore benefits of learning networks for energy efficiency in industrial companies.

KEY RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The research group TIRESIA focuses its studies on the phenomenon of social innovation, especially referring to technology-enabled ways of addressing social needs. TIRESIA emphasises the importance of identifying models that are able to measure the real social return generated by the different social ecosystem actors. Tiresia investigated measurement systems that support interaction between the different players in the social ecosystem to assess and monitor social impact. Tiresia built up a relevant experience in giving strategic consultancy in the definition of social impact indicators and in the social impact measurement, towards corporations, financial institutions, foundations, public administrations and third sector organizations.
