‘Made in Polimi – Storie di Ingegneria Gestionale’ (Stories of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering) has just been inaugurated, the exhibition that tells of the creation and evolution of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, in a time perspective of over 50 years.

This adventure, which really kicked off with the start of the degree programme in ‘Engineering of Industrial Technologies with an Organizational Economic Track’ whose 40th anniversary is being celebrated this year, was made possible thanks to the many professors who strongly believed in the project and enthusiastically built educational and research programmes that were profoundly innovative for the times in which they were conceived. The exhibition traces the most significant phases in five multimedia panels: degree programme, department, observatories, graduate school. A physical and digital place where we can rediscover the full awareness of our ‘roots’ on a daily basis, which are behind the imagination and the construction of our future.

The inauguration ceremony was opened by Alessandro Perego, Head of the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering and promoter of the project, together with the rector Ferruccio Resta and the newly elected rector Donatella Sciuto. Next Federico Bucci, Vice Rector and delegate for Cultural Policies, illustrated the project as a whole. Then the curators Umberto Bertelè, Armando Brandolese, Remigio Ruggeri, Emilio Bartezzaghi went into detail on the breakdown of the contents, the objectives and the method followed in the construction of the narrative, evoking some iconic episodes from the beginning. Before the ribbon cutting, Lola Ottolini the designer of the set-up concluded proceedings.

The exhibition is open to the public from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 6 pm, in Via Lambruschini 4/b – Building BL26/b.

The students of the “Invest in Foreign Markets” Lab among the best in the international “X-Culture” competition

X Culture, the international business-themed challenge, this year saw the participation of 6,188 students from 171 universities and 53 different countries, divided into 1032 mixed teams. As in every edition, students are asked to collaborate remotely for 8 weeks in the realization of a real internationalization project for one of the four Italian companies selected by that have subscribed to X-Culture.

The 44 students of the “Invest in foreign markets” Lab of the Master’s programme in Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering participated in the competition and were distributed to international teams by working remotely with colleagues from foreign universities. At the end of the competition, 12 students from the Politecnico di Milano distributed in 3 groups won the “Best Team” award, awarded both for the excellent peer-to-peer evaluations they received and for the quality of the final reports they produced, which represent real business plans to support the internationalization of the companies involved.

In addition to this, the Politecnico di Milano also distinguished itself with the “Best Instructor” award, which was awarded to prof. Stefano Elia, supported by Alessio Di Marco and Ludovico Benetel, for the commitment and professionalism with which the students were coordinated in carrying out their project, allowing them to also obtain prizes for the “Best Team”.

The Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering in a new guise

After 9 months of renovations, the building in via Lambruschini in Milan is now ready to welcome again the community of the School of Management with completely renovated spaces.
The cutting of the ribbon, together with the Department Director prof. Alessandro Perego, was attended by Prof. Donatella Sciuto, Vice Rector and prof. Emilio Faroldi, Deputy Rector of Politecnico di Milano.


The new spaces of the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering located in the Bovisa Campus of the Politecnico di Milano were inaugurated a few days ago.

Designed on the basis of innovative usage concepts, the new environments are characterized by better lighting, energy saving systems and a biophilic approach. In particular, they have been designed to stimulate exchange and sharing thanks to a greater availability of common areas with different functions and a highly integrated technological service.

The project aimed at both individual well-being and at favoring the encounter allowing great flexibility of use.

The Department moved to the Bovisa Campus in 2009, when the university made available some new buildings following the renovation of the gasometers area. The historic campus of Piazza Leonardo da Vinci was in fact in need of new spaces due to the increase in the number of students, as well as teaching and administrative staff and the project allowed the relocation of some Departments from Città Studi to the North part of the city.

After more than 10 years in Bovisa, the Department decided to renovate not only due to the increase in the number of researchers, but also to adapt to new working habits that in recent years have become more digital, flexible and collaborative.

The Bovisa area was rebuilt following an international competition launched in 1998 by the Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with local authorities (Municipality of Milan and Regione Lombardia).
And now time has come to complete that project started out of a vision of 30 years ago, with the creation of a university citadel whose construction should start by the end of 2022: forty thousand square meters that will become green, the two gasometers transformed into an innovation center hosting companies and two hundred start-ups, and in a four-storey wellness and sports center open to the whole city.

2022 Financial Times Rankings – Masters in Management

The Master of Science in Management Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano has climbed to 77th place in the 2022 Financial Times Rankings of Masters in Management, an improvement of 8 places compared to 2021.


The Master of Science in Management Engineering, delivered by the School of Industrial and Information Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, has obtained a prestigious accolade from the Financial Times, confirming its presence in the “Masters in Management 2022” Rankings where it has improved by 8 places compared to 2021 and climbs to 77th place, despite the fact that the rankings saw the inclusion of 13 new schools that did not take part last year.

On a European level, the programme falls within the top 15 of those delivered by technical universities.
The criteria that have enabled this progress include Salary increase, Career progress – which considers the change in level of seniority and the size of the organisation in which the alumni worked – and International course experience – which considers the participation of students on exchanges and internships abroad.

This result comes a year after a change to the structure of the Master of Science, which today entails an introductory year and a second year split into fourteen different specialisms, called “Majors”. This comprehensive teaching offering aims to provide students of the Master of Science with the skills and tools necessary to play a leading role in handling the country’s economic, industrial and social challenges.

The Laurea Magistrale (equivalent to Master of Science) programme, which is delivered in English, currently has more than 2,000 students, 23% of which are international, while each year sees approximately 900 new arrivals.  The employment rate within a year of graduation is 94% (source: Politecnico di Milano Career Service 2021 employment survey), a testament to the esteem in which companies hold a professional figure with a range of sought-after skills.


Air transport sustainability: a PhD in collaboration between easyJet and the School of Management

Diego Babuder, easyJet pilot, will undertake the four-year Executive Research Path of the PhD Programme in Management Engineering


This year the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with easyJet, is launching an Executive PhD in Management Engineering focusing on sustainability in the airline industry. The course focuses on the challenges and opportunities that digital innovation can have in this area, with a particular focus on how airlines can contribute to the de-carbonisation of the sector and reduce the effects of climate change.

Environmental sustainability is a cornerstone of easyJet’s development strategy and in 2019 it decided to offset emissions from the fuel used on all its flights to meet the global challenges of climate change. “Investing now in the research and development of revolutionary technologies such as hybrid, electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft is the best way to effectively address the global challenges posed by climate change for this sector. This is a historic moment for commercial aviation and we intend to play a leading role in the transition towards solutions capable of significantly reducing the impact of aviation on the environment” – explains Lorenzo Lagorio, easyJet Italy country manager.

“The transition to more sustainable and circular industrial systems is an unstoppable process and for commercial aviation it represents both a challenge and a great opportunity. This is not just about technological innovation, but an overall transformation of business models with systemic impacts at sector level that will lead to the emergence of new supply chains – comments Paolo Trucco, Professor of Industrial Systems at the School of Management and head of the research project with easyJet It is a source of pride and great stimulus for us to be able to study and address these phenomena through a research and training partnership with a leading company in the sector such as easyJet. It is also significant that this collaboration is centred around the doctoral studies of one of their pilots; a demonstration of how the development of human capital underpins the ability of organisations to transform themselves and take advantage of all the technological and operational opportunities to make their business more sustainable”.

Diego Babuder, easyJet pilot for over 7 years, now a new PhD student at the Politecnico, has a degree in air transport management from the UK and has collaborated with the Politecnico di Milano on the lessons of the first level master’s degree in “Fundamentals of the air transport system”. “I am convinced that air transport can play a leading role in combating climate change and set an example for many other industries. There is a lot of enthusiasm for the various research areas that are currently underway, starting with the development of hybrid and electric aircraft and the production of sustainable fuels.”

10 Students | 10 Stories: fundraising campaign kicks off for 10 deserving students

10 Students | 10 Stories – Working together for the students of Management Engineering” is the fundraising campaign that the School of Management at Politecnico di Milano is promoting to help 10 bright young people plan their future together with us.

The number of students enrolling in programmes in Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering is growing every year. This multidisciplinary training course, demanding but gratifying, is much appreciated in the working world. But not everyone can afford the costs involved, not least the cost of living in Milan. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the problem, putting a strain on the resilience of our economic system.

Management Engineering prepares students to be leaders in innovation and change, combining the scientific rigour of methods and theories with the continuous search for a positive impact for the whole community. By supporting deserving students we will all contribute together in the creation a generation of competent and responsible professionals.

UNITIPOSSIAMO – the platform to help shopkeepers

Five former students from the Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering of the Politecnico di Milano, together with others from the same university’s Schools and a number of under-30 volunteers, have established a non-profit startup to help shopkeepers overcome the COVID-19 crisis.

Unitipossiamo or Italian for “together we can”, is a non-profit initiative stemming from the desire of 15 young men and women from all over Italy – mostly unknown to each other – to help shopkeepers overcome the Covid-19 crisis. The project has developed with the voluntary commitment of young professionals and has been rewarded under the Hackforitaly initiative. At present, the platform pools together more than 4,000 business activities across Italy, who either sell purchase vouchers or home deliver their products. In the next few days this number is expected to increase to more than 43,000, generating cash flows of up to €90m for shopkeepers.

Why “together we can”?

Everyone is aware of the need to lend a hand, which is why Italy has seen a multitude of diverse initiatives crop up across the country in an attempt to help trade. But we believe that a fragmented approach is counterproductive. Therefore, we decided to pool together all these initiatives in a single platform, to facilitate those wishing to make a contribution. Aggregator sites simplify searches, meaning that users no longer need to wade through dozens of different sites, and increase visibility for shopkeepers.
The intention behind all these small-to-medium sized initiatives is laudable, but they are unlikely to have a systemic impact if they operate alone. Together, instead, we can.

The problem in figures and its potential impact

The temporary closure of shops could have important repercussions on employment. We are talking about 43,000 closed businesses and, in the darkest possible scenario, of 630,000 jobs at risk.
With an initiative like Unitipossiamo, we believe that, in just a few days, we can reach 43,000 business activities and 4.5 million users who, with an average expenditure of €20 each, could convey over €90m to shopkeepers in difficulty.

What is Hackforitaly?

Taking inspiration from previous initiatives in other European countries, the Italian edition of the event, Hack for Italy, involved an intense weekend (27-29 March) during which several teams worked online to find digital and non-digital solutions to the economic and social challenges arising from the crisis caused by the current epidemic, split by the following categories: Save Lives, Save Communities, Save Businesses.

Almost 1,500 people took up the challenge, putting forward more than 50 projects, developed, starting from simple ideas, during the intense 48-hour marathon. During the first day, teams were formed as the projects were presented, with professionals, experts and entrepreneurs, who had never met before, contributing their diverse backgrounds to the creativity and feasibility of the projects presented.
